Engineering Supplemental Instruction

The College of Engineering in collaboration with the Academic Success Center provides an opportunity for students to explore course content and to practice essential skills presented in engineering classes. The groups are led by students who have taken the class and excel in the topic area. SI Leaders work with professors to develop materials and examples that will enhance a student's understanding of the subject. SI Leaders also share successful approaches to learning the material and performing on tests.

The primary role of the SI is to assist students in achieving a more profound comprehension of the course material that goes beyond what is typically covered in the regular class sessions. The SI typically conducts two one-hour recitation sessions per week, which often focus on the same material presented in the class that week. In addition, the SI holds regularly scheduled office hours, typically at different times than the instructor, totaling approximately three hours per week. Furthermore, the SI attends the class to become familiar with the regular lecture schedule.

During the recitation sessions, the SI covers material that closely follows the topics introduced in the lectures, allowing for the reinforcement of concepts presented in class. These recitations often include discussions of problems similar to homework assignments or topics covered in lectures, as well as solutions to previous exam questions as illustrative examples.
