Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program
The Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program (URAP) in the College of Engineering at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette provides high-performing undergraduate students with a unique opportunity to engage in hands-on, faculty-mentored research.
Through URAP, selected students are paired one-on-one with engineering faculty mentors, working alongside graduate students in active research laboratories. This immersive experience allows undergraduates to contribute to cutting-edge engineering research while developing technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and professional competencies that prepare them for graduate school and the engineering workforce.
Live Oak Scholarship recipients automatically qualify for acceptance into the Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program (URAP). Additional selection criteria may include academic performance, faculty mentor availability, and alignment between student interests and research opportunities.
Program Experience
URAP offers a high-impact educational experience that goes beyond the classroom. As a research apprentice, students:
- Participate in real-world engineering research projects
- Gain exposure to advanced laboratory equipment and methods
- Work closely with faculty mentors and graduate research teams
- Develop critical thinking, communication, and teamwork skills
- Build a strong foundation for graduate studies, industry, or research careers
Undergraduate Research Apprentices are paid employees of the University and are expected to:
- Work 10 hours per week in their assigned faculty mentor’s laboratory
- Maintain strong academic performance while participating in the program
By connecting undergraduate students directly with faculty-led research, URAP strengthens the College of Engineering’s commitment to experiential learning, innovation, and student success—preparing graduates to innovate here and lead anywhere. This paid structure allows students to gain meaningful research experience while supporting their academic journey.
