On Wednesday, December 7, Dean Ahmed Khattab presented an update on the State of the College.

“The College had an outstanding year in 2022,” said Dean Khattab.

“This is an exciting and extraordinary time for the College of Engineering. Through an unshakeable focus, the College of Engineering continues on an upward trajectory of excellence. All indicators of success are on the rise. New programs, new partnerships, the largest curriculum enhancement in the college history, and much more on the horizon,” continued Khattab.

The college by the numbers, showed an impressive enrolment increase of first-time freshmen at 14%.  In the area of diversity, the college excelled in enrollment of female students with 18% enrollment, the largest percentage in five years and 16.5% in enrollment of African American students, the largest percentage in five years as well. Active research grants increased fourfold from $16M in 2019 to over $73M in 2022.

The college recently tenured and promoted four junior faculty to the rank of Associate Professors.  This group published over 101 peer-reviewed journal papers and brought in over $6.7M in external research in the last six years. For seven years in a row, the college has had faculty awarded prestigious and highly coveted Eminent Scholar awards, to include Distinguished Professor awards, Leadership Service awards and Excellence in Teaching awards.

New programs in the college this year include several high school outreach activities, UNIV 100 Introduction to Engineering Innovation, supplemental instruction for engineering courses, student peer advising, freshman summer camp, Order of the Engineer ring ceremony, career development workshops, several student social events, alumni round tables and guest speaker series as well as lots of new activities with various student organizations throughout the college.  These programs and more have impacted 1000+ students.

During the presentation, Dean Khattab thanked his faculty, staff and Dean’s office team for their dedication and unyielding efforts to continue to make the College successful.

We have a bold vision: engineering a strong, smart, sustainable future.  Together, we innovate!
