Originally from New Orleans, Louisiana, Sonny graduated from the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now UL Lafayette) and was commissioned by the US Air Force to serve in engineering and research. He was a licensed Engineer in Louisiana, Texas and Nova Scotia. In 1974, he joined Freeport-McMoRan working in various technical and leadership roles in Engineering, Maintenance, Construction, and Marine Operations in the US and overseas. Sonny completed the Executive Program at UVA’s Darden School in 1985. He joined Denson Engineers in 1996 and worked in the areas of Civil, Structural, and Forensic Engineering.

Sonny served as a Civil Engineering expert witness in both Louisiana state and federal courts. He served as a member of the Louisiana Engineering and Surveying Licensing Board and was active on many of the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying’s exam committees. He received the NCEES Distinguished Service Award in 2006. Sonny was a Life Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and active with the National Society of Professional Engineers.

Sonny has served as an advisor to the Civil Engineering departments at the University of New Orleans, Tulane University, and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He is a Past President of the UL Lafayette Alumni Association and the 1997 recipient of its Distinguished Service Award. Sonny chaired UL Lafayette’s Civil Engineering Advisory Board and taught Civil Engineering at UL Lafayette as an adjunct professor since 2006.
