In 1960, Kam left his home country of Iran, traveled through Europe and landed in Lafayette to study civil engineering at SLI (now UL Lafayette). After earning his BS, he continued his studies at LSU to earn MS and Ph.D. degrees. In 1980, he returned to USL (now UL Lafayette) to assume a position in the Civil Engineering Department. Throughout his career, he served his profession in academia, business and government. He held teaching, research and administrative positions at three universities. His business experience ranges from founding partner and CEO of an engineering management firm to serving as president of FENSTERMAKER. During his tenure as secretary of Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, he led the implementation of a comprehensive management program for the 10-year completion of a 30-year $5 billion statewide highway construction program—the largest in DOTD’s history. Kam has served various academic, civic and professional organizations, including the American Society of Civil Engineers. He has received numerous awards and honors including National Associate of the National Research Council, National Government Engineer of the Year, Louisiana Transportation Hall of Honor and LSU Civil and Environmental Engineering Hall of Distinction. Although now retired, Kam continues his volunteer service at UL Lafayette and in his community.
