Major Burton Fontenot Endowed Scholarship in Chemical Engineering

Major Burton Fontenot was born and raised in Grand Prairie, Louisiana, located in St. Landry Parish. Following graduation from high school, he attended USL (now UL Lafayette) and graduated in 1956.

His major was Physics Education.  Major Fontenot participated in the USL Air Force ROTC program
and received a commission in the Air Force upon his graduation from USL.  Major Fontenot remained in the Air Force beyond his initial obligation and planned to become a career officer.  He later became an Air Force reconnaissance officer attached to the far-East command in Vietnam.  While on a reconnaissance flight in January of 1969, Major Burton Fontenot was killed when his plane crashed.

This scholarship was established in memory of Major Burton Fontenot by Luke Everett & Dolores B. Fontenot as indication of his and the family's respect for education.

Eligibility Requirements

  1. Must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
  2. Preference will be given to the Vice President of the student chapter of AIChE
  3. Graduate students are also eligible to apply
