An Abbeville native, John Pere graduated from Vermilion Catholic High School in 1975 and then earned a Bachelor of Science degree in petroleum engineering from UL Lafayette (USL) in 1979. While attending college, John was active in the Student Society of Petroleum Engineers, serving as vice president from 1978-1979.

Prior to graduation, John started his 38-year career with Hess Corporation, a leading global independent energy company engaged in the exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas. Throughout his tenure at Hess, John helped the company expand its leadership position working on many projects in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, West Africa, and Australia. His expertise includes well workover and completion design, well stimulation, artificial lift, facility design and installation, operations readiness, and operations and project management.

John retired from Hess in November 2016. He has continued to support his alma mater in several activities including serving on the UL Lafayette Alumni Executive Board for two years, serving as vice president of Clubs and Chapters for the Alumni Council, and he recently joined the Petroleum Engineering Department Advisory Board.
