Dr. Tanvir Faisal, Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering received the 2019 Ralph E. Powe Faculty Enhancement Award for his proposal entitled “Design and Development of Architected Cellular Materials Inspired by Plant Petiole.”  His research focuses on discovering a pathway to innovate nature inspired advanced engineered cellular materials with superior mechanical properties.  The use of cellular materials is increasingly growing in the fields of aerospace, automotive, and biomedical applications where strength ratio, high stiffness and low density are often core requirements. 

The prestigious Ralph E. Power Junior Faculty Enhancement Award is based on a commitment by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) to enrich the research skills and professional growth of young faculty at ORAU member institutions.  Recipients are competitively selected from among 167 faculty applications.  The peer-review evaluation and selection process is rigorous and involves outstanding scientists from across the nation. 

On June 25, Dr. Jaimie Hebert, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs presented Dr. Faisal the 2019 Ralph E. Powe Faculty Enhancement Award.

"We are very proud of Dr. Faisal, only the top 20% of applicants are selected." said Dr. Ahmed Khattab, Interim Dean for the College of Engineering.
