Dr. Rafael Hernandez Receives 2025 Distinguished Professor Award
Tue, 02/24/2026 - 12:39pmThe College of Engineering proudly congratulates Dr. Rafael Hernandez, Department Head of Chemical Engineering, on being named the 2025 Distinguished Professor Award recipient. This prestigious recognition honors his outstanding accomplishments in research, teaching, leadership, and service, and reflects the memorable impact he has had on our college community.
Dr. Hernandez’s passion for discovery and innovation is evident in every aspect of his work. He has authored 99 refereed journal articles and delivered more than 150 technical presentations, advancing meaningful research in energy innovation, biofuels, catalysis, and sustainable processes. His pioneering efforts to modify microbial consortia in wastewater treatment systems have helped reimagine how these facilities can serve as sources of sustainable biofuel production; a powerful example of research that blends creativity, rigor, and real-world impact. His work continues to influence and inspire scholars around the world.
His success in securing over $1.8 million in external funding at UL Lafayette and more than $15 million throughout his career, speaks not only to the strength of his ideas, but to the confidence others place in his leadership. With support from organizations such as the BIRD Foundation, NASA, and the Louisiana Board of Regents, Dr. Hernandez has expanded opportunities for students and faculty alike, fostered interdisciplinary collaboration, and elevated the University’s research profile on a national and international stage.
As Department Head for more than a decade, Dr. Hernandez has led with vision, integrity, and a genuine commitment to people. In the classroom, students consistently praise his ability to simplify complex concepts and to challenge them to think critically and confidently. As a mentor, he has guided graduate students, junior faculty, and industry partners with generosity and dedication.
