We are very excited to announce that Dr. Magdy Bayoumi, Department Head of the Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been named a 2025 Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), one of the top honors an academic inventor can receive.

Dr. Magdy Bayoumi wearing a suit and hat standing against a wallNAI Fellows are not just recognized for ideas on paper, they’re celebrated for inventions that make a real difference in the world. And that’s exactly what Dr. Bayoumi does.

From intelligent sensing to energy-smart systems, his research takes cutting-edge engineering concepts and turns them into practical solutions that tackle real-world challenges. Along the way, he’s created incredible hands-on learning experiences for  students, shaping the next generation of engineers ready to innovate and lead.

“Dr. Bayoumi is not just a brilliant engineer and researcher, his creativity, leadership, and dedication to making an impact inspires everyone around him,” said Dean Ahmed Khattab. “This recognition highlights not just his amazing career, but the spirit of innovation we champion every day in our college. I couldn’t be prouder to see his work recognized with this well-deserved honor,” added Dean Khattab.

Dr. Bayoumi’s work and mentorship have earned him numerous accolades over the years, including the Outstanding Doctoral Mentor Award, multiple IEEE honors, and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s Distinguished Professor Award, the University’s highest faculty honor.

Becoming an NAI Fellow is no small feat. This prestigious recognition celebrates inventors whose patented innovations improve lives, boost economies, and create jobs. Dr. Bayoumi now joins a global network of top academic inventors whose discoveries have generated trillions in economic impact and millions of jobs worldwide.

He will be officially honored at the NAI 15th Annual Conference on June 4, 2026 in Los Angeles, where he’ll receive his medal from a senior U.S. Patent and Trademark Office official.

The College of Engineering isn’t just keeping up with innovation, it’s leading the charge, and Dr. Bayoumi is a shining example of that forward-thinking spirit.
