College of Engineering launches state’s only Manufacturing Management concentration
Wed, 04/09/2025 - 3:13pmThe University of Louisiana at Lafayette is excited to announce the launch of a new Manufacturing Management concentration for Engineering & Technology Management majors, starting in Fall 2025. This program is designed for individuals who envision a career in leading teams, solving problems, and optimizing processes in the manufacturing sector. It aims to develop innovative leaders by blending technical knowledge with management skills, preparing graduates to excel in the fast-paced, ever-evolving manufacturing industry.
"Manufacturing is evolving rapidly, requiring professionals who not only understand advanced technologies but also have the management skills to lead and innovate," said Dean Ahmed Khattab.
"This concentration empowers our graduates with the specialized skills and a leadership mindset needed to tackle industry challenges, optimize manufacturing processes, and drive innovation. It also aligns with national efforts to reshore manufacturing, strengthen our industrial base, and ensure that critical production capabilities remain within the United States," continued Khattab.
Manufacturing remains a cornerstone of the U.S. economy, contributing to 17% of the Gross Domestic Product in 2024. However, by 2034, the industry is projected to experience a workforce gap of 1.9 million jobs, reflecting a high demand for qualified professionals to drive the future of manufacturing according to the National Association of Manufacturers. Roles in this field often provide competitive salaries and opportunities for innovation and growth.
The Manufacturing Management concentration curriculum provides a strong foundation in manufacturing management, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for leadership roles in the industry. Additionally, students gain a business minor, emphasizing managerial and financial skills, further enhancing their leadership capabilities in the manufacturing industry.
Dr. Shelton Houston, head of the Department of Engineering Technology, highlighted the program’s focus on meeting industry needs. “Our Manufacturing Management concentration is designed to develop skilled leaders who can adapt to and improve the manufacturing industry,” Houston said. “By combining hands-on technical training with key management principles, we’re equipping our graduates to take on the challenges and opportunities in today’s manufacturing world.”
