Welcome and Address to the New Graduates

Welcome to the Class 2020 College of Engineering Graduation Ceremony. Ragin’ Cajun Engineering family – Good morning. I’m so thrilled to be with you celebrating your success today as the class of 2020. Congratulations! I am very proud of you. This is a great day……Commencement has always been one of my favorite events. However, this particular one, will be etched in my memory forever.

This commencement marks a tremendous personal milestone for you. You completed the final steps of your academic journey during a global pandemic, one of the largest crises our world has ever faced. It has been said that the Class of 2020 will be known for the Coronavirus, thus becoming the COVID-19 Class. I reject that! COVID-19 may have changed the way you live and learn, but it did not stop your success, it did not stop you from reaching your goals. I say, because of the challenges you faced and overcame, the Class of 2020 will be always known for its strength and resilience. Resilience means facing life’s hardships and difficulties with boldness and courage. It means being patient and steadfast. Being resilient is not only about being strong, but it is also about never giving up.

We taught you in 101 “strength of materials class” the difference between Strength, Durability, Toughness and Fatigue. Resilience, as you know, is the ability of an object or system to absorb and recover from an external shock. Use your knowledge of strength of materials not only in your professional career but also as a cornerstone of every aspect of your life. During these uncertain times, your resilience was tested. This commencement means, you were strong enough to handle it. You were strong enough to live it. Because you are strong enough to go through it. To thrive through it. To inspire others through it. Your story is your strength. Your story is the story of someone who refused to give up. At some point you made a promise to yourself: “I won’t stop.” Congratulations, you did not stop, and you fulfilled your promise.

Remember, YOU will play a key role in the growth and stability of our country economy. Your time at UL prepared you very well and shaped into well-rounded leaders and innovators. Your great Ragin’ Cajun engineering education will be the pillar you can always lean on. I have no doubt, that your experiences here at our great university will enable you to make the world a better place. Always dream big, nothing stops you from dreaming big, so dream big and follow your dream. Once again congratulations! I wish you all well!

Address to the Faculty & Staff

Now to my Faculty, the most instrumental group, the group behind the success our graduates. Despite all odds----a global pandemic, a very active hurricane season, and a great deal of uncertainty---you persisted!! You have taken this crisis to task with equity and education in mind. You have gone above and beyond expectations and your efforts have been remarkable. Thank you for your passion for education and research.  You have forever changed the course of many young lives. Special thanks to our Associate Dean, Assistant Deans, Department Heads, administrative assistants and all staff who help to make every semester a success.

Address to the families of the Graduates

Parents, Grandparents, family members and friends. I know how you feel. I was in your seat before. I know that behind each and every one of our graduates, there is a story of loved ones who supported, encouraged, inspired them and who stood by them. You should be very proud of their achievements. You have done such an excellent job.
