College of Engineering News – Engineering and Technology Week
The College of Engineering and the Student Chapter of the Louisiana Engineering Society celebrated Engineering and Technology Week, April 7-11, 2008 at UL Lafayette. Joey Durel City Parish President of the Lafayette Consolidated Government issued a proclamation naming the week of April 7 th as “Engineering and Technology Week in the City and Parish of Lafayette. The event showcased the engineering profession and included speakers, various sports contests between the engineering departments, a research poster contest for graduate students, an undergraduate student paper contest with cash prizes sponsored by E. R. “Ray” DesOrmeaux, a blood drive and other events, including an Awards Banquet on Friday, April 11th. The “highlight” of the week was Engineering and Technology Expo Day, Wednesday, April 9, when the college hosted high school students from the Acadiana area and beyond in a day celebrating the various disciplines of engineering and technology and the myriad ways in which they contribute to today’s societal needs. There were also competitions designed to entertain and engage the visiting students: (1) the perennially popular “egg drop” where an egg (supplied by UL) is dropped from a bucket truck (courtesy of Lafayette Utilities System) cradled in a container manufactured by participating high school students. (The judging criteria vary slightly from year to year, but the winner must have an intact egg at the end of the drop!) (2) A “just for fun” paper airplane contest which can be “entered on the spot.” And, new this year (3) a spaghetti bridge competition. Each department and representative industries provided displays and opportunities for attendees to learn about the diverse aspects for career development in the fields of engineering and technology. The event was planned and organized under the auspices of the College of Engineering and the Student Chapter of the Louisiana Engineering Society, but could not have been the success it was without the efforts of the Student Chapters of all professional engineering societies and the faculty and staff of the departments within the College. The College of Engineering wishes to acknowledge and thank the many industry participants without whom this event would not have been possible. We also acknowledge support from our corporate sponsors, including Acadiana Fun Jumps, Baker Hughes, Inc., Caprock Communications, CLECO, Coca Cola Bottling of Lafayette, ConocoPhillips, E. R. DesOrmeaux, Inc., Louisiana Engineering Society, Our Lady of Fatima School, and Siemans Water Technologies.
