The College of Engineering recently hosted a delegation from the Wuhan Institute of Technology (WIT) located in Wuhan, Hubei, PR of China. Professor Daniel Gang, currently a member of the Civil Engineering faculty at UL, was a faculty at WIT before coming to the University of Missouri as a Ph.D. student. Dr. Gang and Dr. Rakesh Bajpai of the Chemical Engineering faculty at UL were instrumental in bringing the WIT delegation to UL Lafayette to discuss collaboration in engineering research and education.
Professor Yuanxin Wu (President of WIT and Professor of Chemical Engineering), and Professor Mingsheng Gong (Dean of the School of Chemical Engineering and Pharmacy), Professor Zhibin Ma (Dean of the School of Material Science and Engineering) and Professor Hong Yang (Dean of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering), visited UL Lafayette on May 13-14. During their stay they met with Dean Mark Zappi and Associate Dean Terrence Chambers, and numerous faculty and administrators within the College of Engineering and with University administrators including President E. Joseph Savoie, Provost and VP of Academic Affairs Steve Landry, VP of Research Robert Stewart and Dean of the College of Sciences Bradd Clark. Their tour of the campus included visiting various engineering laboratories and the LITE Center.
Collaboration with WIT has the potential to benefit UL Lafayette in several ways including (but not limited to):
- Increasing enrollment of undergraduate and graduate students from central China
- Expanding UL Lafayette’s international programs to central China, including the possible establishment of study abroad programs for UL Lafayette students in China
- Enhancing UL Lafayette’s graduate programs through the recruitment of quality students from WIT, which is an excellent engineering and technology institution many of whose graduates wish to further their education
- Joint research initiatives between the faculty of the two institutions (UL Lafayette and WIT), particularly in fields such as alternative energy and nano-technology.
